Do You Eat the Ends of Bread?

08/03/2009 - 6:28AM · Posted by nancyeinhart

I always eat the ends from our loaves of bread. Andrew just leaves them in the bread bag, assuming they have my name on them. I actually like the ends, especially when I'm eating some type of burger and it stands in for a bun. A co-worker told me this means I would be a good mom, since moms are always eating stuff no one else wants. How about you?

Hahaha — I love the "only begrudgingly" option — that's what I picked! That describes my feelings toward the ends of bread loaves perfectly.

On a bread loaf the end pieces are just that - the end. Typically stale, usually thin and small, the heals, the butts, the tails are hardly usable, but not unusable. Think of them as bread martyrs, the sacrificial lambs of the loaf.

Don't fret, little bread ends, your time in this world is not without purpose! Though you may not be the same sandwich star as your brethren, you are still useful. Keep your fellow slices fresh! And in the end, my ends, you can always be a crouton.

So sayeth The Andrew
