Pal's Takeaway has been on my list of must-try sandwich spots for at least a year, but I'm not often at 24th and Hampshire on a weekday. So when I recently had a rare Monday off in SF, I finally buddied up to Pal's.

Needless to say, expectations were high. On Pal's website, the sandwich makers proclaim that their ongoing mission is "to find some good f*cking stuff to put between pieces of bread." It is succeeding with a daily-changing menu of innovative eats and an irreverent sense of humor.

I ordered the delightfully clever 'Wich Came First sandwich, featuring tarragon-poached chicken breast and egg salad with chives.
Located in a corner grocery store in the Outer Mission/Potrero area, Pal's isn't your usual deli counter. The shop goes to great lengths to explain its locally sourced ingredients: my sandwich was served on Acme levain with "River Dog pasteurized egg salad with chives, shiso, brown butter, pickled cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes, and wild arugula."

The rainbow of ingredients resulted in truly vibrant, well-balanced flavors. I worried chicken plus egg salad would be too heavy, and while this wasn't a small sandwich, the proportions were reasonable. The crisp "pickled cucumbers" were in fact quickly, lightly pickled cukes, rather than pretentiously named pickles, which crunched delightfully against the super ripe tomatoes.
My only complaint about Pal's is that it's too far away from my house.
