Sandwich Share: Ron and Linda's Fried Pork Tenderloins

07/16/2009 - 6:33AM · Posted by nancyeinhart

Nearly every region of the country has a sandwich that's a source of pride; in Indiana and Southern Illinois, it's the fried pork tenderloin, also called a Hoosier tenderloin in Indiana. In this fiercely local sandwich, the bun is mere garnish for a double-wide disc of breaded pork spilling over the sides.

The recipe originated in Huntington, IN, where Nick Frienstein first served breaded cutlets in 1908. The pounded-pork style remains remarkably unchanged, paying homage to the tradition of German Wiener schnitzel. Ringo Ronnie and his wife Linda, who hail from Streator, IL, recently got homesick for their hometown sandwich and whipped up a batch. Ringo recommends topping your 'loin with mustard, pickle, and onion. Check out the step-by-step photos below. (Want to share your own sandwich photos? mmmmm is right, Anonymous. Having had the pleasure of eating a tenderloin in the past, I can say that this is down-home sandwiching at its best. I remember visiting family in Illinois as a kid and getting one at the local "Root Beer Stand." My favorite part was eating all the spillover until it was a tight bun fit.

Ringo and Linda, the pics really capture the tenderloin experience!

So sayeth The Andrew

Ringo and Linda must be missing the famous Oogie's tenderloin, the definitive breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. I grew up in Streator, went to school with Oogie, and mourned when they closed. I was back in Streator this summer, rode in on the Harley on a Tuesday and saw a sign that said, "Tenderloin Tuesday at Broadway Tap." Yep, they have tenderloins on Tuesdays at the old Broadway Tap. I went in there, ordered a tenderloin basket and a side order of a tenderloin sandwich. I only get tenderloins once every few years when I get back to Streator, so I always have to have two. Thanks for the recipe, I'll give it a try.

Its funny how I was just thinking about how I miss oogies and their tenderloin sandwich and homemade root beer. Then found this site on the Internet.
My wife was from Streator and I lived there for 6 years before moving back to Colorado.
