Sandwiches at the Movies: Yea or Nay?

January 24, 2011 6:59 am · Posted by Nancy Einhart

I've been known to sneak sandwiches into movies and — understandably — get a hard time for it. But at the Sundance Kabuki, you can order a sandwich and a cocktail to enjoy in the theater, making it my favorite movie venue and helping me justify my behavior.

Better yet, Kabuki's sammies, like the turkey club (below) and Kalua pork, are yummy and relatively easy to eat in the dark. I think sandwiches at the movies make sense — at least, a hell of a lot more sense than, say, hot soup, which I kid you not, I recently saw two people eating at the movies. So tell me: would you order a sandwich at the movies?

I'm a straight popcorn and candy sorta guy. That's not to say I haven't eaten a sandwich at the movie, but when I did I felt a little dirty about the whole thing.

Look, I'm sorry popcorn! It was a one time thing. It didn't mean anything to me, I swear!

Need I remind you of the fanciest of theaters - Silver Screen Theaters in Pensacola, FL? Where there are swivel chairs and tables involved in additiona to the alcohol and food. Ahhh, good times.

When I was in AmeriCorps and virtually penniless right after college I'd sneak a sandwich from Ratto's deli in Oakland (have you been there? Amazingly good sandos) into the Jack London theater. A matinee and a pastrami on dutch crunch with basil mayo — a pretty good combination for a Sunday afternoon.

I have been known to sneak a Subway in at a pinch. Anything better than that would be welcome!

Eating a sandwich and having a cocktail seem much more sensible than nachos.

Hm, I like sandwiches, and I like movies, but I think the "sandwich at the movies" idea has a fatal flaw...to consume, I must either bend my head to take a bite (thus missing the movie) or pull the sandwich up in front of my face while my eyes stay affixed (thus risking sandwich splatter). It's a difficult decision, so I'll have a small popcorn.

Honey don't you feel bad about it one bit. I'll sneak sammiches anyplace! I've even snuck bulgogi into a movie once. And for The Devil Wears Prada I took in champagne!
