Sloppy Joes Like Mom Used to Make

September 28, 2009 2:21 pm · Posted by nancyeinhart
Not my mom, actually. I don't think she made sloppy joes very often — probably because I wasn't especially fond of them, due to my aversion to ketchup. But Andrew's mom is a sloppy joe making pro, so on a recent visit to San Francisco, we requested a command performance. So I'm trying to branch out. I made vegetarian sloppy joes with portobello mushrooms to warm up for Linda's ground beef version. Her special recipe, with a satisfying balance of sweetness and zippy onion flavor, is one of the best I've eaten. To her credit, I photographed the sammies on day two, so they were sloppier the first time around than in these photos. Did your mom make sloppy joes when you were growing up? Tell me about her recipe, and

Au contraire. Your mom did make sloppy joes, but she used Manwich and they probably were not this good.

I had a vague recollection that you made them, but they definitely weren't one of your signature dishes. Your grilled cheese and pb&J waffles on the other hand...

now we're cooking w/ gas. I especially like the shot w/ the finely grated cheese sprinkled atop the goods. we ate sloppy joes fairly often growing up though I don't have mom's recipe. I've one I'm considering sharing though it's so simple it's unlikely to surprise or inspire anyone until they taste it.
a little bit of this and that you'd likely expect and a dash of this or that you may not.

the sloppy joe belongs in the snad hall-of-fame.
