I have long been drawn to Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe for the name alone. It can't beat Taco's Sandwiches (in name or in taste), but Mario's makes up for it with old-world coziness. I finally made it to Mario's for the famed focaccia sandwiches and panini, so get a taste and take a 'wich trip.

Like chefs Tom Colicchio and Dennis Leary before him, Graham Elliot Bowles has a sandwich side project. Tartine Bakery's Triple-Threat Sandwiches

Though I've been to the famed Tartine Bakery a few times, until last weekend, I'd never had its sandwiches. I've made a Tartine sandwich recipe at home, and now I've had the real deal, times three. These are no dainty French sandwiches but rather two-handed handfuls, cut into thirds, with each third the size of a normal half sandwich. Usually I plan my 'wich trips in advance, camera in hand. But the other day, I found myself with some extra time on my City CarShare reservation, so I hightailed it to La Torta Gorda for a long-awaited taste of some of San Francisco's best tortas. Did they live up to my high expectations? So much so that even the crappy iPhone photos are making me hungry.

Broken Record Raises the Bar

I first read about the Broken Record on The Hamblogger, which inspired a long trek out to Crocker Amazon in search of the heralded bacon and beef burger. But the Broken Record is so much more than a purveyor of beef patties embedded with diced bacon - though that alone would be enough. It's really like a reverse epicurean mullet: dive bar in the front, duck confit salad in the back. The watering hole raises the bar on bar food. Click through to see how.

'Wich Trip: Paseo Caribbean Restaurant in Seattle

I went all the way to Seattle for a Cuban sandwich, and Paseo was worth the trip. Really, I was there on vacation with friends, but we all agreed the sandwiches were a highlight. The Cuban meat sandwich landed on Esquire's best sandwiches in America list, which I'm slowing eating my way through. Paseo's roadside stand resembles a candy-colored double wide with no sign, but the sandwiches are palatial. Feast your eyes on greatness in the gallery below.

'Wich Trip: Saul's Deli in Berkeley

With boxes of matzoh overlooking loaves of Acme Bread, Saul's Restaurant & Deli in Berkeley is the countercultural deli counter. The Kosher joint recently stopped serving salami until it could find a sustainable supplier, yet its corned beef is worthy of Katz's. I was already planning a trip to Saul's before it surfaced in a recent New York Times story about the sustainable deli movement, but the attention is well-deserved. Check it out below.

Sandwich Share: Charlie the Butcher's Beef on Weck

After seeing how I yearned for a beef on weck, my Buffalonian buddy Josh made a special trip to Charlie the Butcher, his weck destination of choice, located "on an awkward corner adjacent to the Buffalo Niagara airport." Not only did he take a bunch of photos ("Everybody thought I was crazy snapping photos every 5 seconds," he says) but he also sent in a wonderfully written account of his 'wich trip.
