Weekend Improv: Cutie-Pie Banana Muffin 'Wich

01/31/2010 - 10:19AM · Posted by nancyeinhart

Last weekend, I decided to bake, a very rare occurrence for me: banana walnut muffins designed to fight PMS! Though they definitely tasted healthy, they were yummy enough to put me in a good mood, moist and flavorful.

Of course I couldn't resist making at least one of them into a whoopie pie-inspired muffin sandwich, slicing it across the middle and icing it with fromage blanc from Cowgirl Creamery. How cute is that?

Sandwich Share: Working Girls' Italian Sub

Last time I stepped out for lunch at Working Girls, I went for a veggie sandwich. Andrew's Friday lunch is significantly meatier, and the melty goodness is making me jealous. It's ham, salami, cheese, pepperoncini, tomato, and lettuce on a soft, balsamic-soaked roll.

Behold: Selleck Waterfall Sandwich

I am not going to pretend that I fully understand Selleck Waterfall Sandwich, but that doesn't mean I don't love it. As the name indicates, this blog is nothing but photos of Tom Selleck, waterfalls, and sandwiches. All three things, in every photo.

Like this photo of Tom with his shirt unbuttoned in front of a waterfall and a giant pita. What's not to love? Thanks to Phil for keeping me abreast of this bit of web brilliance.

On the Phone: Chicken and Ham Club

Lunch today: the grilled chicken club from Montomery Street's low-profile but high-quality Deli & . . . The chicken was coated in some delicious seasoning, topped with ham and swiss, and dressed with Dijon on a delicious wheat roll. The irony is that I originally ordered a veggie sandwich, but they were out of eggplant and roasted red pepper, so I had to make a snap-decision second choice and ended up with double meat instead.

Porchetta Perk: Leftover Porchetta Sandwiches

01/27/2010 - 7:36AM · Posted by nancyeinhart

For a dinner party we hosted the other night, Andrew prepared porchetta: pork tenderloin butterflied and stuffed with a garlicky, fennel concoction, then wrapped in pork belly and roasted. It was succulent. But really one of my favorite things about pork for dinner is leftover pork sandwiches. And believe me, we had a lot of leftovers. We even made soup!

It reminds me of that book Dear Mr. Henshaw, where a boy corresponds with the author of a book called Moose on Toast, dealing with the myriad ways to eat leftover moose. The sandwiches got more gourmet by the day. The most recent, pictured above, used Acme seeded sourdough rolls, Humboldt Fog cheese, and Dijon mustard. Check out two more sammies and soup after the jump.

Have You Ever Snuck a Sandwich Into the Movies?

01/26/2010 - 11:10AM · Posted by nancyeinhart

I'll admit, it was one of my most psycho food moments. Because I love sandwiches and hate wasting food, I once sneaked half a sandwich, leftover from the previous night's dinner, into a movie matinee. Andrew made fun of me, and I couldn't blame him.

I've been known to stop by 'Wichcraft before movies at the Westfield mall, though I spare my fellow moviegoers by not ordering the anchovy. Epicurious's post about sneaking snacks into the movies got me thinking: has anyone else ever sneaked a sandwich into a movie theater?

The RZA Likes Waffle 'Wiches Too

01/25/2010 - 6:55AM · Posted by nancyeinhart

I think waffle sandwiches are divine, and at least one member of the Wu-Tang clan agrees.

In a recent interview with Time Out New York, rapper the RZA describes his signature burger, which sounds remarkably similar to my recent waffle creation:

A RZA burger is a veggie patty with a fried egg, cheese, lettuce, pickles and all that, smashed between two delicious waffles. Spread mustard and mayo on it with a little butter and put that shit together. Trust me, son, that shit needs to be in stores.

The blogger behind Eudaimonia recently re-created the recipe, pictured above, with a garden burger, a fried egg, cheese, caramelized onions, and a leftover chile relleño from Chevy’s. My mouth is watering, making me think I've been remiss is not putting veggie burgers on waffles. The leftover chile relleño is similarly brilliant. Would you eat it?

Warming My Starbelly: Sandwich and Pizza Brunch

01/22/2010 - 5:13PM · Posted by nancyeinhart

After being thwarted on my latest visit to Ike's Place by a horrifically long line — seriously, who waits an hour for even a great sandwich? — Andrew and I ducked into Starbelly. A new-ish, chic-cazh Castro eatery from the folks behind Beretta, Starbelly has a brunch menu offering everything from French toasts to pizzas to a pristine Pimm's Cup. Of course, I was in the mood for a sandwich; we split one along with a pizza and some fries. All delicious, so check out the slideshow below.
