A Waffle Sandwich Dine and Dash

Waffles are an underrated sandwich vehicle, but I'm a big fan of salty-sweet waffle sandwiches. So when I heard about a cafe in San Francisco earning props for its waffle creations, I put it on the sand wist list. When I finally made it to Dash Cafe, the waffle sandwiches underwhelmed me, but maybe I caught them on a bad day. At least the Belgian-style waffles showed promise; click through to see.

'Wich Trip: Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe

I have long been drawn to Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe for the name alone. It can't beat Taco's Sandwiches (in name or in taste), but Mario's makes up for it with old-world coziness. I finally made it to Mario's for the famed focaccia sandwiches and panini, so get a taste and take a 'wich trip.

Hidden Gem: Rhea's Deli in San Francisco

From the street, it looks like any old neighborhood market, but inside, it crafts big, brash sandwiches that meld very SF ingredients (like Acme bread) with exotic flavors like katsu pork and Korean marinated steak. Click through to see what you're missing.

Randomwiches: 7 Odes to National Sandwich Day

I plan to celebrate by eating a sandwich for lunch. But you know, I eat a lot of sandwiches, and I take a lot of pictures of them too. Each month I find myself with some leftover pics that didn't make it into a blog post but still look delicious. So I present my new feature, Randomwiches, where I round up eight sandwiches that have nothing really in common except that I ate them. Let the celebration begin!

Round Two: The Deli and the Dive Bar

The first time I discovered Clare's Delicatessen, I knew I'd be back. The premise is just too perfect to avoid: a late-night deli and kitchen that delivers sandwiches and tater tots to the dive bar next door, the 500 Club. Last weekend, my friends and I found ourselves there after a day of drinking in the sun, and it was even better the second time around. Here's what hit the spot.

Easy Cheesy Goodness at The Melt

Though I got an extra special sneak peek of The Melt, it wasn't until yesterday that I paid a visit to the much-hyped outpost of the new fast casual chain in downtown SF. My dining companions, including Julia of PopSugar SF, agreed that the concept of a gourmet grilled cheese restaurant often falls short, but a fast-food grilled cheese restaurant makes a great easy, comfy hot lunch.
Grahamwich: Nostalgia With a Spread of Whimsy

Like chefs Tom Colicchio and Dennis Leary before him, Graham Elliot Bowles has a sandwich side project. Last fall, the Michelin-starred owner of Graham Elliot opened Grahamwich in downtown Chicago, so when I visited my peeps at PopSugar Chicago last week, we had our lunch meeting over sammies - or should I say "grahamies"? Though not as avant garde as No. 7 Sub, Grahamwich gives nostalgic favorites a modern, quirky twist.
Taco's Sandwiches: Awesome Name, Awesome Eats

Sometimes it pays to be a punctuation snob. When I first saw the awning for "John's Burgers Taco's Sandwiches," on San Francisco's dingy 6th Street, I assumed it was a serendipitously funny apostrophe error, that the owners actually meant "Burgers, Tacos, Sandwiches." My delight and curiosity led me to Taco's Sandwiches, a surprisingly impressive sandwich shop actually owned by a man named Taco.
Mr. Pickle's, I Presume?

Ever since I saw the sign many years ago, I've wanted to eat at Mr. Pickle's for the name alone. Then I started hearing good things about the sandwiches, and that toque-wearing Mr. Pickle looked even friendlier. I finally tried Mr. Pickle's a few weeks back, and I was not disappointed - though, despite what some people say, it's nowhere near as good as Ike's. Click through the photos, then chime in with your thoughts.

Though I've been to the famed Tartine Bakery a few times, until last weekend, I'd never had its sandwiches. I've made a Tartine sandwich recipe at home, and now I've had the real deal, times three. These are no dainty French sandwiches but rather two-handed handfuls, cut into thirds, with each third the size of a normal half sandwich. Commence the virtual face-stuffing by clicking on the gallery below.
