I went all the way to Seattle for a Cuban sandwich, and Paseo was worth the trip. Really, I was there on vacation with friends, but we all agreed the sandwiches were a highlight. The Cuban meat sandwich landed on Esquire's best sandwiches in America list, which I'm slowing eating my way through. Paseo's roadside stand resembles a candy-colored double wide with no sign, but the sandwiches are palatial. Feast your eyes on greatness in the gallery below.

The Great Grilled Cheese Off

Last weekend, our friend Matt hosted his 2nd Annual Grilled Cheese Off, which began last year as an impromptu tournament and which this year I was lucky enough to attend. With three categories - Purist (bread and cheese), Anything Goes (meat, veggies, whatever), and Dessert - the competition was fierce. Way back when I started this whole sandwich adventure, I stumbled across a Flickr photo of the grilled calamari sandwich at Fish in Sausalito, and I've wanted one ever since. Finally, finally, I made it to the sustainable seafood house on the Sausalito harbor, and dare I say the sandwich exceeded my expectations. The only problem is there are too many things on the menu I'm dying to try; I'll have to go back. Meanwhile, come sail away to seafood land.

When I was a kid, this diner, opened in 1946, had a reputation for NOLA's best burgers, and as I learned the morning after po'boys and plenty of bourbon, it hasn't lost its touch. 'Wich Trip: Saul's Deli in Berkeley

With boxes of matzoh overlooking loaves of Acme Bread, Saul's Restaurant & Deli in Berkeley is the countercultural deli counter. The Kosher joint recently stopped serving salami until it could find a sustainable supplier, yet its corned beef is worthy of Katz's. I was already planning a trip to Saul's before it surfaced in a recent New York Times story about the sustainable deli movement, but the attention is well-deserved. Check it out below.

Ice Cream Sandwich Season Officially Begins!

To my delight, this weekend was unexpectedly warm in San Francisco, and lucky for us, our friends Bob and Lexie invited us over for a sunny backyard barbecue. For dessert, my girl Libby took it to the next level with homemade ice cream sandwiches. A fan of It's It treats, Libby made oatmeal raisin cookies from scratch, chewy but just firm enough to serve as the perfect vehicle for the Three Twins organic ice cream in between: chocolate and vanilla, of course. Having a Sandwich Party

New baby equals sandwich smorgasbord! On Saturday, I joined a delegation of visitors to meet my friends Matt and Kate's new baby, Willa. We offered to bring lunch, so naturally, sandwiches were on the menu. At Say Cheese in Cole Valley, we bought four sammies: jambon and gruyere, black forest ham, Cajun turkey, and a veggie option with avocado, roasted red pepper, and havarti. We cut them up into quarters and voila! Instant sandwich-eating, baby-meeting party. The baby did not eat any sandwiches, but the cat did.

After seeing how I yearned for a beef on weck, my Buffalonian buddy Josh made a special trip to Charlie the Butcher, his weck destination of choice, located "on an awkward corner adjacent to the Buffalo Niagara airport." Not only did he take a bunch of photos ("Everybody thought I was crazy snapping photos every 5 seconds," he says) but he also sent in a wonderfully written account of his 'wich trip.

Bakesale Betty's famous fried chicken sandwich didn't make it onto 7x7's Big Eat list, but it has been on mine for a while, and I'm not alone. The sandwich has a cult following that reaches far beyond Oakland; LA chef Vinny Dotolo gets one every time he's up north. After being thwarted on my latest visit to Ike's Place by a horrifically long line - seriously, who waits an hour for even a great sandwich? - Andrew and I ducked into Starbelly. A new-ish, chic-cazh Castro eatery from the folks behind Beretta, Starbelly has a brunch menu offering everything from French toasts to pizzas to a pristine Pimm's Cup.
