Tartine Bakery's Triple-Threat Sandwiches

June 23, 2012 11:07 am · Posted by Nancy Einhart

I am slowly eating my way through the sandwich menu at Tartine Bakery. First, I made a Tartine sandwich recipe at home, and now I've had the real deal, times three. These are no dainty French sandwiches but rather two-handed handfuls, cut into thirds, with each third the size of a normal half sandwich. Check out photos from my first visit as well as a recent return with my mom in the gallery below.

A Taste of Saigon in Sausalito

May 28, 2012 10:34 am · Posted by Nancy Einhart

Lately I've been revisiting spots where I once enjoyed a great sandwich and trying a new one. That includes going fishing again at Sausalito's Fish, where I devoured a grilled calamari sandwich a couple of years ago.

This time, I ordered the saigon salmon sandwich, a take on banh mi with grilled salmon cooked medium rare, topped with carrots, jalapeno, cilantro, and ginger-scallion sauce.

This sandwich was also outstanding: all the fixings of Little Saigon with seaside-fresh seafood and Fish's super fresh torpedo rolls. Andrew ordered the fried oyster po'boy (below), which was also tasty but not quite as good as this variation on the Vietnamese po'boy. Frankly, it's hard to go wrong with fresh fish on fresh bread, and Fish knows how to nail it.

'Wich Trip: Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe

December 1, 2011 7:24 am · Posted by nancyeinhart

I have long been drawn to Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe for the name alone. It can't beat Taco's Sandwiches (in name or in taste), but Mario's makes up for it with old-world coziness. I finally made it to Mario's for the famed focaccia sandwiches and panini, so get a taste and take a 'wich trip.

Grahamwich: Nostalgia With a Spread of Whimsy

Like chefs Tom Colicchio and Dennis Leary before him, Graham Elliot Bowles has a sandwich side project. Last fall, the Michelin-starred owner of Graham Elliot opened Grahamwich in downtown Chicago, so when I visited my peeps at PopSugar Chicago last week, we had our lunch meeting over sammies — or should I say "grahamies"? Though not as avant garde as No. 7 Sub, Grahamwich gives nostalgic favorites a modern, quirky twist. Click through to see what we ate.

'Wich Trip: La Torta Gorda

December 2, 2010 11:06 am · Posted by nancyeinhart

Usually I plan my 'wich trips in advance, camera in hand. But the other day, I found myself with some extra time on my City CarShare reservation, so I hightailed it to La Torta Gorda for a long-awaited taste of some of San Francisco's best tortas. Did they live up to my high expectations? So much so that even the crappy iPhone photos are making me hungry.

Gettin' Naked Lunch: Fried Green Tomato Sandwich

October 5, 2010 8:09 pm · Posted by nancyeinhart

We're about to set off on our honeymoon, but we had a day off in the city before our flight. To me, this equals an opportunity to eat a sandwich somewhere I can't normally go on weekdays. So today, I hit up Naked Lunch in North Beach, then realized that the name was a fitting prelude to a honeymoon. Click through to see what I ate.

Broken Record Raises the Bar

September 14, 2010 9:26 pm · Posted by nancyeinhart

I first read about the Broken Record on The Hamblogger, which inspired a long trek out to Crocker Amazon in search of the heralded bacon and beef burger. But the Broken Record is so much more than a purveyor of beef patties embedded with diced bacon — though that alone would be enough. It's really like a reverse epicurean mullet: dive bar in the front, duck confit salad in the back. The watering hole raises the bar on bar food. Click through to see how.

'Wich Trip: Paseo Caribbean Restaurant in Seattle

I went all the way to Seattle for a Cuban sandwich, and Paseo was worth the trip. Really, I was there on vacation with friends, but we all agreed the sandwiches were a highlight. The Cuban meat sandwich landed on Esquire's best sandwiches in America list, which I'm slowing eating my way through. Paseo's roadside stand resembles a candy-colored double wide with no sign, but the sandwiches are palatial. Feast your eyes on greatness in the gallery below.

'Wich Trip: Camellia Grill in New Orleans

What could possibly follow soft shell crab po'boys at Parasol's in New Orleans? Burgers and breakfast at the Camellia Grill in Riverbend. When I was a kid, this diner, opened in 1946, had a reputation for NOLA's best burgers, and as I learned the morning after po'boys and plenty of bourbon, it hasn't lost its touch.
