Delicious or Disgusting? Krispy Kreme Chicken Sandwich

July 30, 2010 4:10 pm · Posted by nancita

I'm normally grossed out by donut sandwiches, particularly this abomination involving the KFC Double Down. But I have to admit, the simplicity of this Krispy Kreme chicken sandwich featured on This Is Why You're Fat almost makes me consider tasting it. Maybe it's because the jelly filling reminds me of a Monte Cristo. What do you think?

Disgusting But Delicious: Pollo Asado Torta

After an extended Friday night happy hour and the burlesque show at El Rio, I was ravenous. Thankfully, El Farolito was there, shining like a beacon in the night. Though I usually go for the burritos, this time I ordered a torta.

The fluorescent lights and grainy cell-phone photos might make this look disgusting, but do not be fooled: it was delicious. Really, really delicious. Grilled chicken with an obscene amount of melted cheese, served on pillowy soft bread toasted to a slight crisp on top. Combined with the spicy but not too spicy peppers, it was a fiesta in my mouth.

Check out some more disgusting but delicious photos.

Disgusting But Delicious? Potato Chip Sandwiches

The White Trash Cooking cookbook features several somewhat horrfying sandwich recipes, including one for a potato chip sandwich:

Spread the mayo generously across the bread. Pile the potato chips on to one of the slices as high as you can. Then top it with the other slice and mash down until all the potato chips are crushed.

When I read that, I have flashbacks to an old roommate, who used to sandwich about a cup of Lay's between white bread slathered in mustard, then bite into it, sending chip crumbs all over the kithen floor. But I've also had people tell me how much they love adding a few potato chips to an otherwise standard sandwich. Are you a fan of chips on sammies?

Disgusting But Delicious: Pub Food Sammies at the Tee Off

You'd never guess from looking at it that the Tee Off bar in the Outer Richmond has an impressive menu of pub grub, just what you want to devour after a few of their highly potent margaritas. At Andrew's birthday, I ordered the fish sandwich, basically a sandwich-centric enhancement of fish and chips.

The golden fried cod and chips were impeccably crisped and served alongside homemade tartar sauce. But my sandwich got an unlikely condiment halfway through the meal. Here's photographic evidence of the incident.

Disgusting But Delicious: Drunken Egg Sandwich

I won't be satisfied with my food photography skills until I can take a mouth-watering picture of a cheesesteak. Because let's face it: some of the most delicious (often big and messy) sandwiches look absolutely icky in photos. Hence, Disgusting But Delicious, where I pay tribute to great but grody-looking sammies. For instance, this egg sandwich at Sparky's 24-Hour Diner in San Francisco.

Served on wonderfully greasy wheat bread, this eggy mess came with tomato, cheese, and two fistfuls of sauteed onions. I also asked for avocado, which turned out to be more like guacamole. But after too many Manhattans at Martuni's, it was the perfect dinner. And that's not even the grossest photo.
