Playboy Has Good Taste - in Sandwiches

Everyone loves sandwiches, even Playboy! And of course, everyone loves a sandwich list! Playboy's top 10 includes plenty of droolworthy photos - a departure from the mag's usual subjects - and three of my personal favorites: the banh mi at Saigon Sandwiches, the pastrami at Katz's, and the French Dip at Philippe's in Los Angeles (below).

Rounding out the top 10 are the lobster roll at Straight Wharf Fish Store in Nantucket, a Cuban in Tampa, Pat's King of Steaks Philly cheesesteak, Al's Italian beef, and more. If you've been to any of these other joints, I'd love to hear your recommendations, though it sounds like Playboy knows its stuff.

'Wich Trip: Katz's Deli, Part II - Pastrami Sandwich

Though the Reuben is delicious, pastrami is Katz's claim to fame - with good reason. I've always been a lukewarm pastrami fan, finding it tasty but not quite getting all the fuss. Then I picked up a slice from the plate the counterman gives you to sample while waiting for your sandwich, squares of glistening meat laid out like a deck of cards. It was mind-blowingly delicious: salty, bacony, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. See what all the fuss is about.

'Wich Trip: Katz's Deli, Part I - The Reuben

It's not easy to eat an entire Reuben at Katz's, the legendary New York deli founded in 1888 - especially considering I haven't eaten corned beef or really any red meat in about eight years. But on my recent NYC sandwichstravaganza, I pretty much devoured this baby, except for a hearty overflow of meat that spilled out onto the plate. It was just too good to abandon in the interest of fullness.

Katz's is most famous for its pastrami, and with good reason (more on that in Part II). But the relatively new Reuben, added after the deli stopped keeping Kosher about 20 years ago, is not to be missed. Served on untoasted rye bread, three inches of soft, crumbly corned beef are covered with sauerkraut, a blanket of swiss, and homemade Russian dressing. NYC Sandwichstravaganza

Please pardon my absence over the past week. I have been on vacation in New York City with my boyfriend Andrew, visiting family and friends, exploring the city, and eating lots and lots of sandwiches.

Researching the Reuben and the hero and random sandwiches in between, I sampled my fare share of sandwiches from many fine purveyors. Stay tuned for full posts, but for now, here's a sampling of the sandwiches we sampled:
