Last night's post happy hour dinner: sweet pulled pork sandwich with North Carolina-style mustard BBQ sauce at Memphis Minnie's, one of the stops on my 10-sandwich tour of the US in San Francisco.

Sandwich Share: Pricey Pork at Boulette's Larder

September 6, 2010 8:08 am · Posted by nancyeinhart

My friends and readers know that I have very high standards for expensive sandwiches. If it costs more than $9, it better be gigantic, impeccably prepared, or both. Andrew recently ate this inviting-looking roasted pork sandwich over lunch at Boulette's Larder. Had it been $10, he might have described it as "excellent," but given the price, it was just "not worth $16."

'Wich Trip: Paseo Caribbean Restaurant in Seattle

July 15, 2010 9:47 pm · Posted by nancyeinhart

I went all the way to Seattle for a Cuban sandwich, and Paseo was worth the trip. Really, I was there on vacation with friends, but we all agreed the sandwiches were a highlight. The Cuban meat sandwich landed on Esquire's best sandwiches in America list, which I'm slowing eating my way through. Paseo's roadside stand resembles a candy-colored double wide with no sign, but the sandwiches are palatial. Feast your eyes on greatness in the gallery below.

The Sentinel: Third Time's a Charm (and a Mess)

I've never had a bad sandwich at The Sentinel, but I've complained about the place, mostly because I think it's overhyped. As a sandwich lover and a fan of Denis Leary's restaurant, Canteen, I really want to love his sandwiches: a daily-changing menu of homemade, sustainable ingredients on fresh-baked bread.

On my first three visits, I've been disappointed by the haphazard construction, which to me is one of the most important factors of sandwich-making. Though I know the lunch rush is very busy, the sandwiches felt thrown together, which seems unacceptable for a place that always ends up on lists of the city's best sandwiches. I judge it by higher standards, but I keep giving The Sentinel a chance. On my last visit, I was very impressed. Find out why.

Sandwich Share: Il Cane Rosso's Pork

April 13, 2010 7:22 pm · Posted by nancyeinhart

After declaring Il Cane Rosso's warm egg salad sandwich one of five San Francisco sammies I need to try ASAP, I suggested to Andrew (my intended) that we meet there for lunch sometime. So the next day, he went without me.

I know, I can't believe it either. But I can't be too mad, because he took a photo of his sandwich and emailed it to me. Or maybe he was just gloating. Regardless, doesn't this milk-braised pork sandwich with fennel and green olive tapenade look divine? I think I have to go this week, without Andrew.
