Sandwich Share: Dar es Salaam's Greatest Sandwich

After a monthlong sandwich blogging hiatus, I needed some inspiration to get back in the swing of things, and what should arrive in my inbox but the most exotic sandwich share we've seen on Between the Bread. This sandwich, ordered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, comes from my friend Hunter, who also shared this delicious Spanish sandwich.

Here's what he had to say:

"While the clumsily named 'Honey Soy Glazed Steak with Mango Chili Salsa Sandwich' may belabor the ingredient list, it also belies the tastiness of Dar es Salaam's greatest sandwich.

Here's how it goes down: A very simple quasi 'ciabatta' bread envelopes an adequate yet modest slice of marinated steak, lettuce and humble (yet no doubt expensive, imported) crumble of cheddar cheese. Left to itself, this is a ho-hummer, but the mango salsa - a sweet and sour explosion of candied onion shreds and mango cubes - elevates the sandwich to heretofore unimagined heights in this humid, coastal, African city by the sea.

The sandwich was begging to be shared . . . who knows when one of your readers might find themselves peckish in Dar, and think: To the Black Tomato! Gotta get me a sandwich!"

Melt Bar and Grilled is definitely on my sand wish list, as long as I don't have to order the 13-cheese "Melt challenge." My friend Joy, a Cleveland native, counts Melt among her hometown favorites and recently shared thisdisgusting but delicious gourmet grilled cheese specimen.

Served on Texas toast, the Northcoast Shores features crab cakes, garlic spinach, roasted red pepper, and herb cream cheese. Why, yes, I would take that challenge. How about you?

Going through my emails looking for another sandwich photo, I came upon this submission from earlier in the month. At the Mercury Cafe in San Francisco, my friend Katie endorsed this caprese creation on an Acme baguette. Says Katie: a "generous serving of fresh mozz. It's a solid."

Sandwich Share: Turkey Hits the Big Time

On a recent road trip, Between the Bread reader Tiffany took in a sandwich from Big Town Hero in Ashland, OR, which is apparently a regional chain and a delicious one at that. Says Tiff, "Turkey, cucumber, lettuce, cream cheese. Very English. Super yum." Turkey, cukes, and cream cheese is one of my favorite combos.

My friends and readers know that I have very high standards for expensive sandwiches. If it costs more than $9, it better be gigantic, impeccably prepared, or both. Andrew recently ate this inviting-looking roasted pork sandwich over lunch at Boulette's Larder. Had it been $10, he might have described it as "excellent," but given the price, it was just "not worth $16."

Sandwich Share: Bocadillo Jamón y Queso

My friend Hunter was wise enough to marry an awesome Spanish woman and nice enough to share the sandwich he's eating this summer in Spain. As he explains, "Summer in Spain means beaches and bocadillos. At any of the bars or beachside chiringuitos, you're sure to find some variation of this classic Spanish sandwich."

The simple sandwich highlights two of Spain's most famous homegrown ingredients: Iberian ham and creamy, cured Flor de Esgueva Manchego cheese, which Hunter calls the Bentley of Manchegos.

Sandwich Share: Carnegie Inspiration at Cupalicious

My hometown now has a joint called Cupalicious, which features a rather unappetizing website but very appetizing sandwiches. Perhaps the fact that it's located in a suburban office strip proves they mean business. Between the Bread readers Hal and Laurie (creator of the Sloppy Jayne) recently snapped photos of their Cupalicious feast.

The deli sandwich with fries ($7.25, above) and chicken salad sandwich ($4, below) look Carnegie-esque in size, but for seriously less cash. I want one, weird website be damned.

Sandwich Share: Lotsa Lobster at Waterbar

You'd think any sandwich loaded with lobster would be divine, but they can't all be as stellar as the lobster roll Phil had on the East Coast. Andrew recently ordered the lobster BLT with cucumber-mint salad at San Francisco's Waterbar, but the sando proved to be a great idea, poorly executed, with stale bread and not very flavorful shellfish. For $22, lobster or no, a sandwich should be damn near perfect.

Sandwich Share: The Colossal Reuben at Carnegie Deli

Katz's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side arguably has the best pastrami in NYC, but Carnegie Deli has the biggest, without a doubt. Between the Bread reader Danielle recently ordered the $16 Reuben at the famous Midtown deli. All I can say is, OMG.

Write Danielle: "There is bread way down under the piles of pastrami. I added lots of mustard." It's possible to have too much meat, but you can never have too much mustard.
