Grilled Cheese Martini: Yea or Nay?

July 28, 2011 7:36 pm · Posted by Nancy Einhart

I love sandwiches and cocktails — often together. But I've never eaten a grilled cheese and thought, "you know what would be good with this? A martini." Apparently, that comfort food and booze combo makes sense Beecher's.

The Seattle cheese emporium, which recently opened in NYC, has an off-menu item called the grilled cheese martini, which is exactly what it sounds like: grilled cheese sandwich-infused vodka, shaken with fresh tomatoes, muddled basil, and tomato juice.

Now here's the really terrifying part: Beecher's isn't the first to mix up a grilled cheese martini. Clive's in Victoria, BC, makes one with grilled cheese rum.  Would you dare order one?

Sandwiches at the Movies: Yea or Nay?

January 24, 2011 6:59 am · Posted by Nancy Einhart

I've been known to sneak sandwiches into movies and — understandably — get a hard time for it. But at the Sundance Kabuki, you can order a sandwich and a cocktail to enjoy in the theater, making it my favorite movie venue and helping me justify my behavior.

Better yet, Kabuki's sammies, like the turkey club (below) and Kalua pork, are yummy and relatively easy to eat in the dark. I think sandwiches at the movies make sense — at least, a hell of a lot more sense than, say, hot soup, which I kid you not, I recently saw two people eating at the movies. So tell me: would you order a sandwich at the movies?

Waffle Sandwiches: Yea or Nay?

December 16, 2010 7:21 am · Posted by Nancy Einhart

Apparently it's sandwich truck week at Between the Bread, with news that a new waffle sandwich truck called Brass Knuckle will be hitting the streets of San Francisco in January. I am a big fan of the waffle sandwich, but I didn't realize it was really a thing that other people ate. (Well, besides the RZA.)

The menu sounds interesting, but most of the items — spicy fried chicken salad and slaw on a lemon waffle; beets, eggplant, and blue cheese on a parsley garlic waffle — sound a little complicated for me. What I love most about waffle sandwiches is the sweet/salty combo, so I'll have to taste these to really decide. Do you like waffle sandwiches?

Sandwich Ordering: Do You Go Half-and-Half?

February 10, 2010 4:54 pm · Posted by Nancy Einhart

Since it's always difficult for me to decide what sandwich to order, I am a big fan of strategic sharing. I order one sandwich, my companion orders another, and we swap halves. That way, we both get plenty of food — in some cases, an obscene amount — and variety too.

On a recent stop by DeLessio, I didn't want a whole Cuban sandwich, but had I only eaten the turkey and cranberry, I would have been jealous of Andrew's Cuban. This solution satisfied us both, and both sandwiches were scrumptious in their own way. Do you do this?

Have You Ever Snuck a Sandwich Into the Movies?

January 26, 2010 11:10 am · Posted by Nancy Einhart

I'll admit, it was one of my most psycho food moments. Because I love sandwiches and hate wasting food, I once sneaked half a sandwich, leftover from the previous night's dinner, into a movie matinee. Andrew made fun of me, and I couldn't blame him.

I've been known to stop by 'Wichcraft before movies at the Westfield mall, though I spare my fellow moviegoers by not ordering the anchovy. Epicurious's post about sneaking snacks into the movies got me thinking: has anyone else ever sneaked a sandwich into a movie theater?

NYC vs. Philly: What's the Better Sandwich City?

October 29, 2009 3:40 pm · Posted by Nancy Einhart

Philadelphia is facing the Yankees in this year's World Series, and these two great baseball cities are also prime sandwich cities. Of course, Philly has the Philadelphia cheesesteak, as well as the hoagie, the roast pork, and the ballpark favorite, the Schmitter. But New York boasts its own Italian great, the hero, plus the Reuben and other NY deli classics. Which city do you think wins the sandwich showdown?

What's Your Favorite Sandwich Condiment?

If I were on "The Newlywed Game," this question would be a cinch. When it comes to sandwiches, at least, Andrew's favorite condiment is fantasy baseball mustard. So is mine, though I also love a good olive tapenade, pesto, hummus, or Trader Joe's corn salsa. How about you?

Is a Hamburger a Sandwich?

June 22, 2009 6:58 am · Posted by Nancy Einhart

After a recent trip to Vancouver, I realized I hadn't eaten a sandwich in five days! Then I second guessed my declaration when I remembered our burger cookout (pictured).

But to me, a burger isn't really a sandwich; it started out as one but has since transcended the definition to become its own distinct category. What do you think?
